IMO 2024-25 Exam Pattern
Exam Pattern for Level 1
The first level of the IMO is designed to be inclusive, allowing a broad range of students to participate. The exam is structured according to the syllabi of various educational boards, including CBSE, ICSE/ISC, and State Boards, ensuring that the questions are accessible and relevant to students across different educational systems.
The Level 1 exam is conducted within school premises during regular school hours, making it convenient for students to participate. Schools are provided with the flexibility to choose from three different test dates offered by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF), the organising body of the IMO. This flexibility ensures that schools can select a date that best fits their academic schedule, minimising disruptions. Each test date comes with a unique set of question papers, ensuring fairness and preventing any potential advantage for students taking the exam on different dates.
The exam is conducted in English and consists of a 60-minute objective-type test. For students in classes I to IV, the test comprises 35 multiple-choice questions (MCQs). These questions are designed to test basic arithmetic, logical reasoning, and fundamental mathematical concepts. The aim is to assess the students' understanding of the subject and their ability to apply mathematical principles in a timed environment.
Exam Pattern for Level 2
Level 2 of the IMO is where the competition becomes more rigorous, with only the top performers from Level 1 advancing to this stage. Level 2 is specifically designed for students in classes III to XII, and the level of difficulty is significantly higher than that of Level 1. This stage is crucial as it identifies the most talented and skilled students in mathematics from across the globe.
For classes V to XII, the Level 2 exam consists of 50 objective-type questions. These questions are more challenging and cover a wider range of topics, including algebra, geometry, number theory, and advanced arithmetic. The time allotted for this exam is also 60 minutes, similar to Level 1. However, the complexity of the questions requires a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and quicker problem-solving abilities.
