Stages of IEO 2024-25
The International English Olympiad (IEO) 2024-25 is conducted in two distinct stages, designed to progressively challenge and evaluate the English language proficiency of students from classes 1 to 12. Here’s an overview of each stage:
Stage 1: School-Level Examination
The first stage of the IEO is the school-level examination, which is open to all registered students across classes 1 to 12. This stage serves as the preliminary round, testing students on various aspects of the English language, including grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing skills. The exam is typically held at the students’ respective schools, ensuring a familiar environment to help them perform their best. Each student’s performance in this stage is crucial, as it determines their eligibility to advance to the next level of the Olympiad.
Stage 2: National/International-Level Examination
The second stage of the IEO is a more challenging round, open only to students from classes 3 to 12 who have performed exceptionally well in Stage 1. The top-performing students, usually those ranking high in their respective classes, are selected to participate in this national or international-level examination.
The two-stage structure of the IEO ensures a thorough assessment of students’ abilities, rewarding not just knowledge but also the application and understanding of the English language.

IEO Eligibility Criteria For Level 1 & 2
Level 1 Eligibility
The Level 1 examination of the IEO is open to students from grades 1 to 12, making it accessible to a broad spectrum of participants. One of the most inclusive features of the IEO is that there are no stringent eligibility requirements for this level. Any student enrolled in a participating school can register for the Level 1 exam, regardless of their previous academic performance or proficiency in English.
This inclusivity allows students of all skill levels to take part in the Olympiad, encouraging them to challenge themselves and improve their language abilities. Schools typically facilitate the registration process, ensuring that interested students can easily enroll and participate in the competition.
Level 2 Eligibility
While Level 1 is open to all, the Level 2 examination is more selective, focusing on students who have demonstrated exceptional performance in the initial round. To qualify for Level 2, students must meet one of the following criteria:
- Top 5% Ranking: Students who rank in the top 5% of their class in the Level 1 exam are eligible to advance to Level 2.
- Top 25 in Each Zone: The top 25 rank holders from each class within their respective zones also qualify for Level 2.
- School Toppers: In schools where at least 10 students from a class participate, the highest-scoring student from each class is eligible for Level 2, provided they have scored at least 50% of the qualifying marks.
- Section-wise Top Scorers: For schools with multiple sections in a grade, the top scorer across sections will be considered for Level 2, ensuring that the brightest students are selected.
